The World Wars
Like most European countries, Germany has fought many wars to become the country it is today.
In 1914, the assassination of Austria’s crown prince - Franz Ferdinand - led to war in Europe. Germany sided with the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires.
The conflict was one of the bloodiest and most terrible in history. At the time it was known as the Great War, however we now refer to it as the First World War.
Two million German soldiers died between 1914 and 1918. In the end, Wilhelm, the Emperor of Germany abdicated, changed the country to a republic and surrendered.
Through the economic success of the 1920s and 1930s, the Nazi party increasingly gained power. They were a ‘far right’ political party who strongly believed in German nationalism.
The Nazis also held the belief that they belonged to a pure race (called ‘Aryans’) and therefore that people who were not should be exterminated.
Due to the party’s economic success, Adolf Hitler was chosen as chancellor of Germany in 1933. From this position of power, he further established the Nazis as the country’s controlling force, calling the regime the ‘Third Reich’, referring to the country’s third ruling era.
The Nazis’ extreme views led them to invade neighbouring Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, triggering the Second World War.
During this period, the Nazi party imprisoned and murdered millions of people from the social and religious groups they did not agree with. We now call this tragedy the Holocaust.
This war lasted six years, but was finally brought to an end with Hitler and the Nazis defeated in 1945. Hitler shot himself before he could be brought to justice.
